The Basics:
All spreadsheets are Excel workbooks (.xls files) and were created with Microsoft Excel 2003.
The workbook will contain more than 20 sheets. One is a team sheet and the rest are player sheets.
This is an example of a team sheet. The number preceding the player's name represents their sheet number.
To bring up their sheet, you click on the tab at the bottom.
Tips:
- Use the Tab key when you've entered data to move to the next cell on the right. Using Enter will select the cell below. (Although, if you Tab through O-M-R-W entry, for example, pressing Enter after the W entry will return back to the O column on the row below.)
- The method of dismissal cell contains a drop-down list for easy selection. However, if you type the method the first time, you'll only have to type the first letter the next time that player is out in that method. Useful for openers who get caught every innings.
Instructions:
First time only: The following steps are only needed when creating a new spreadsheet (i.e. entering the first figures for the season.)
- Save as: Before changing anything, select File menu > Save As and name your season's file. This way you retain the blank spreadsheet.
- Player name entry: Enter the names of the eleven players on the player sheets. Do not enter names on the team sheet. Once entered in cell A1 of a player sheet, a player's name will automatically appear on the team sheet.
It is usually a good idea to enter the players' names in the regular batting order. If a player misses the first match, but plays in the second, they will become player sheet 12. If this happens to be your regular opener, you may want to leave a sheet for them (number 1 or 2) for easy entry later in the season, and put your first match fill-in player on sheet 12. Disregard if you have high player turnover.
- Team page: Enter the team, season, year details in A1. In cell B27, replace the x with the number of days or overs to which the matches are limited.
Every time: The following steps are the regular process for entering statistics.
- Go to player sheet 1 (or, if they didn't play, the first that did.) Fill in 'vs Opponent at Venue', press Enter or Tab, then click on the cell and press Ctrl + C (or right-click and press C). Go to each player's sheet who played in that match, click on the same cell on their sheet, and press Ctrl + V (or right-click and press P.) If a player misses a match you should leave a blank cell in the 'vs Opponent...' column where you pasted the data for all other players. This way all matches line up on the player sheets regardless of who played in which match.
If you have a long list of players, and aren't sure if you have pasted the match details for all the players in that particular match, you can check on the team page. Highlight all of the values in the matches column, and you will see "Sum = ..." just above the taskbar on the bottom right of the screen. The number should be divisible by 11. (i.e. After 5 matches, the Sum = should be 55. If it is 54, you have missed a player.)
- Go back to the first player's sheet. Click on C5 and enter the amount of runs the player scored in the first innings. Put a * in D5 if the player was not out. Enter balls faced (if applicable), select method of dismissal (or not out) and enter 4s and 6s scored. (Leave all batting figures blank if player did not bat in an innings.)
- Repeat above step for all players' sheets. When inputting batting figures, it is easiest to work from player sheet 1 onwards, stopping at each player who played in the match and entering their figures from the scorebook. For bowling, it is easier to start at the top of the bowler list in the scorebook, find the player's sheet and enter the figures, then continue down the list of bowlers.
- Bowling figures is simple O-M-R-W entry and fielding
figures are catches, stumpings and run outs. Note that if a twelfth man or other substitute fielder takes the field, and effects a dismissal, you can record the fielding statistics only on the match's row. Playing as a substitute in cricket doesn't count as an actual match (as you can't bowl or bat) so don't record opponent or venue or the player will be credited with an extra match.
